Explicit Phonics Lesson
Digraph qu, wh
Day 1
Objective: Sound and blend words using the digraph wh
and the qu spelling.
Review
We have learned that two letters that
work together to make one sound are called a digraph. What are the digraphs
that we have already studied? –ck,
sh, th, ch/-tch When are the –ck and -tch spelling
used? After a short vowel sound. What is a
digraph? Two letters that work together to make one sound.
Today we are going to study a new digraph. Show the Whooshing
Whale picture card. Wh come together to make the /hw/
sound. The whooshing whale sound is a quiet
sound that blows air out of your mouth. Hold your hand in front of your mouth
and feel the air that comes out when you make the /hw/ sound. With the sound of
the letter w, not as much air comes out of your mouth. The sound of wh is /hw/ as in whale, why, and
whisper. The sound of the wh is a windy sound. It is made with a puff of air.
(NOTE: We are
loosing the /hw/ sound in our language. It may be very difficult to distinguish
between /w/ and /hw/ for many. If the effort is made to use more air for the
/hw/ sound, children are more likely to be able to spell words with w and wh
more accurately.)
What do
we call two consonants that work together to make one sound? digraph
What
sound does the digraph wh make? /hw/
What
kind of sound does the wh make?
A windy sound
Is /hw/
a stream of air or a puff of air?
puff
What is
the spelling for the Whooshing Whale sound? wh
Another letter
combination that we are going to study this week is the qu spelling. It isn’t a
digraph because this spelling makes 2 sounds, but the sounds aren’t the sounds
you might expect of these letters. The sound of qu is /kw/ as in quilt,
question, and queen. The letter Q never is found in an English word without u
following it. They always go together.
What
spelling uses the /kw/ sound? qu
Is the
qu spelling a digraph? No
What is
a digraph? Two letters that
work together to make one sound.
What is
the sound of qu? /kw/
Is Q
ever in a word without a U following it?
no
PA (oral)
Listen to
these words and see if you can hear the /kw/ or not. If you hear /kw/ in the
word, I want you to give me a thumbs up. If you don’t hear /kw/ in the word,
give me a thumbs down. So if I say quake,
/k/ /w/ /ā/ /k/, you would give me a thumbs up because the /kw/ sound is in the
word quake. If I say kit,
/k/ /ĭ / /t/, you would give me a thumbs down because you do not hear /kw/ in
the word kit.

previous lessons. Take time to talk
about the meanings of any words that might be unknown.

be:
1. small pieces of material sewn together to be

When there is only one word left (quicksand), have the buddies read the last word. Each
buddy then uses the word in a sentence

Day 2
Review
Yesterday we studied a letter
that never goes in a word unless it is followed by the letter u. What letter
was that? Q Yes, qu always go together when q is in a word. The sound of
qu is really two sounds so qu is not a digraph. Qu makes the sounds /kw/. Name
some words that begin with /kw/. Queen, quite, quart, etc
What do we call two consonants that
work together to make one sound? digraph
Yesterday also we studied the wh digraph that has a
windy sound. What is that windy sound? /hw/ That
sounds almost like the sound of the letter w that says /w/. Which one uses more
air? /hw/ Some words that begin with wh are:
whale, whistle, why, where and whittle.
PA (oral)
I am going to
say some words. If a word begins with the /wh/sound, I want you to give me a
thumbs up signal. If I say whinning,
you would give me thumbs up because whinning begins with /hw/. If I say vine, you would give me the thumbs down
signal because it does not begin with /hw/. Be sure your Buddy has the right
answer. (Segment words if needed.)

sentence using the word. Have them go for 7-Up sentences (7 or more words in
the sentence.)
Decodable Text
Use qu/wh phrases to practice reading
words in text. The first time through have them follow as you read. The second
time, have them chorally read with you. Then the Buddies can take turns reading
to each other.
